Who I am
I teach developer teams how to get reproducibly good results with AI tools. That is my core topic today, and it is the logical continuation of almost 30 years in software development: I have been working as a professional developer since 1997, and I have been teaching for almost as long. I have been self-employed since 2012, and Microsoft has awarded me MVP status every year since 2013.
ChatGPT was released at the end of November 2022. One week later I tried it for the first time, and since March 2023 I have been working with paid AI subscriptions. The real turning point came later, though: when the models became capable enough to take on entire tasks instead of single lines of code, I started to systematically work out a development process for them. First in my own projects, then with my team at Quality Bytes, and by now with my customers' teams. That process is exactly what I teach in my trainings today: no prompt tricks, but a workflow that works every single day.
My second pillar is the .NET world: I have written three books on .NET MAUI, published by Carl Hanser Verlag, and through code contributions, documentation, and issues I am an official contributor to .NET MAUI. Beyond that, I have published more than 30 video courses on LinkedIn Learning, covering topics from .NET MAUI to Azure DevOps, Git, and Entity Framework, and I have given more than 100 conference talks across the .NET ecosystem, including BASTA! and Developer Week.
The stations
1995 · The first lines of code, the first sale
At the vocational school for data processing in Bad Neuenahr-Ahrweiler I write my first serious programs in Clipper. I turn a homework assignment about Deutsche Telekom's new tariff zones into a product: an electronic phone book that logs calls with a timer and calculates the charges as it goes. It becomes the first software I ever sell, for 5 German marks. During an internship at a radio station I see first-hand how error-prone its ad-spot sales process is. In the school project that follows, I digitize the process with a team of classmates: our DOS application replaces carbon-copy pad and pocket calculator, calculates without errors, and prints millimeter-precise into the old preprinted forms. The station's head of sales is thrilled, but with no laptops in the field, it never makes it past the prototype.
1997 · An apprenticeship with real projects
Apprenticeship as an IT specialist at hancke & peter (later arXes Information Design AG) in Bendorf near Koblenz. Already during the apprenticeship I deliver software projects on my own responsibility, among others for Nürburgring GmbH, and give my first trainings: Word, VBA, and internet courses for beginners.
2000 · Team lead in Cologne
At the Cologne branch I lead a team of eight as technical team lead. We build with VB6, Office automation, and Classic ASP.
2002 · .NET from version 1.0
As lead developer at IBS AG I roll out an international C# project for beverage can production in France, Poland, the United Kingdom, and Germany, and later our software's SAP interface in Austria, Switzerland, and the USA as well. Alongside my job I complete my computer science degree at FH Köln (Dipl.-Inform. FH) and write my first articles for the dotnetpro magazine.
2008 · Community and architecture
Together with three friends I found the .NET User Group Koblenz. As Senior Application Architect at CSC Deutschland GmbH I am responsible for .NET projects in the public sector, including at EU level. Alongside my job I complete a Master of Science in business informatics at TH Köln. In 2009 I stand on a conference stage for the first time, at BASTA! Spring. In 2010 I work with TX Text Control for the first time, the document automation component that has been with me ever since.
2012 · Going independent
I start out as an external software architect, soon also as a trainer and consultant. Focus areas: software quality, clean code, testing, Azure DevOps, and app development, first for Windows 8, then cross-platform with Xamarin. My first TX Text Control trainings follow. In the same year I become a video course author (today LinkedIn Learning), and in 2013 Microsoft awards me my first MVP title. Infragistics and Text Control have honored me as MVP as well.
2018 · Quality Bytes
The development contracts keep growing, so I found Quality Bytes GmbH. Today my team there builds custom software, modernizes grown .NET applications, and develops apps with .NET MAUI.
Since 2022 · The AI process
From the first ChatGPT experiments to systematic work: I develop a reproducible AI development process and make it the core of my trainings. Since summer 2025 I have also been a supervisory board member of ODYSYS AG, a software company I previously supported in adopting AI.
